Fidan Calls Gaza Ceasefire Deal "Historic Signature"

(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has described the recently established accord at the Sharm el-Sheikh peace summit as a "historic signature," highlighting its importance for the Gaza Strip and the wider Middle East.

Speaking on a television broadcast, Fidan explained the broader impact of the ceasefire agreement, touching on Türkiye’s diplomatic approach and the changing dynamics of the region following the truce.

According to Fidan, the deal represents a significant milestone. He stated, "It was a historic signature. It was extremely important for Gaza, for the region, and for the reassertion of our president’s global leadership."

He pointed out that the accord not only addresses the current conflict but also strengthens Türkiye's role on the international stage.

Fidan issued a stark caution regarding the potential failure of the truce, asserting that its collapse would not lead to a typical military confrontation but rather to "a renewed genocide."

He emphasized that Israel’s military actions, given their technological and logistical dominance, should not be viewed as a conventional war.

Instead, he argued, "The breakdown of the ceasefire means that Israel is using its overwhelming superiority in weapons to kill defenseless Palestinians. It's not war that will begin, but genocide that will begin again."

The foreign minister further remarked that the violence in Gaza cannot be classified as a traditional battle between equally matched forces.

"This is not a traditional conflict where both sides fight on equal footing. What continues in Gaza is systematic extermination," he said, underlining the disproportionate nature of the hostilities.

Fidan concluded with a strong call for a lasting political resolution, warning that without a permanent settlement, any pause in violence would be temporary.

He noted, "If there is no permanent two-state solution, we may stop this war now, but another one will erupt in a few years. As long as occupation and oppression persist, resistance will continue."

His remarks reflect ongoing concerns that temporary ceasefires are insufficient in addressing the deeper roots of the conflict.
