Iran, Russia, China Declare End to Tehran’s Nuclear Issue
(MENAFN) In a joint message delivered Saturday to the UN secretary-general and the Security Council, Iran, Russia, and China asserted that the nuclear agreement with Tehran has officially concluded.
This declaration effectively terminates the UN Security Council's ongoing deliberation on the Iranian nuclear matter.
The three nations strongly rebuked the United Kingdom, France, and Germany—collectively known as the E3—over what they labeled a “legally and procedurally flawed” initiative aimed at activating the snapback mechanism.
This mechanism would reinstate United Nations sanctions on Iran under the framework of UN Security Council Resolution 2231.
In their letter, the trio emphasized that “The attempt by the E3 to trigger the so-called ‘snapback’ is by default legally and procedurally flawed.” The communication further contended that the European powers, “having themselves ceased to perform their commitments under both the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) and Resolution 2231, lack the standing to invoke its provisions.”
The implication is that since these nations no longer honor their own obligations, they are in no position to enforce its terms on others.
The statement reiterated that “in accordance with operative paragraph 8 of Resolution 2231, all its provisions are terminated after Oct. 18, 2025.”
It underscored that the “full and timely conclusion of Resolution 2231 marks the end of the Security Council’s consideration of the Iranian nuclear issue and contributes to strengthening the authority of the Council and the credibility of multilateral diplomacy.”
This suggests a belief that closing this chapter will bolster the UN's standing and the effectiveness of international negotiations.
Moreover, Iran, Russia, and China called on all involved nations to remain committed to “finding a political settlement that accommodates the concerns of all parties through diplomatic engagement and dialogue based on mutual respect.”
They urged restraint from unilateral sanctions, threats, or any escalatory actions that might worsen the situation.
