Trump Hints at Potential Peace Deal with Russia
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has indicated that his recent dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin might pave the way for a resolution to the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
Trump shared these thoughts during a press briefing after their telephone conversation on Thursday.
The relationship between the US and Russia has experienced renewed strains over the possible shipment of American Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, alongside stalled peace negotiations.
According to Trump, the extensive two-and-a-half-hour discussion was extremely “productive” and could soon lead to a peace agreement.
“I thought it was a very good phone call, very productive… And we think we’re going to get [the conflict] stopped,” he stated.
“This may be such a productive call that we’re going to end up… we want to get peace.”
Prior to the briefing, Trump posted on Truth Social that “great progress was made” during the conversation, adding that he and Putin had agreed to convene a bilateral summit in Budapest, Hungary.
He informed reporters that this meeting will probably take place within two weeks, following talks between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, as well as Trump’s upcoming meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Washington on Friday.
The previous Putin-Trump summit, held in Anchorage, Alaska, in August, did not produce any major breakthroughs, but Trump remarked on Thursday that it had “set the stage” for a wider peace initiative.
