First Pakistani hyperspectral satellite gets launched from China
(MENAFN) Pakistan marked a significant milestone in its space program on Sunday with the launch of its first hyperspectral satellite, HS-1, from China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the country’s northwest.
According to reports, the Foreign Ministry confirmed that “The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has achieved a major milestone with the successful launch of Pakistan’s first Hyperspectral Satellite (HS-1) from the Chinese Satellite Launch Centre.”
Equipped with “advanced hyperspectral imaging technology,” HS-1 can capture detailed data across multiple narrow spectral bands, enabling precise observation of land patterns, vegetation health, water resources, and urban growth.
Officials said the satellite will “significantly enhance national capacities” in key areas such as precision agriculture, environmental surveillance, city development, and disaster response.
“In addition, HS-1 will contribute to development initiatives, including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) by identifying geo-hazard risks and promoting sustainable infrastructure development,” the statement noted.
The mission represents a “pivotal step forward in Pakistan’s space program” and demonstrates SUPARCO’s continued effort to harness space science for national progress, it added.
The achievement also highlights the enduring cooperation between Islamabad and Beijing in the “peaceful exploration of space” and their shared commitment to advancing socioeconomic development.
The launch event was broadcast live from SUPARCO’s Karachi control center, coinciding with the successful liftoff in China, according to reports.
