6.0-Magnitude Quake Strikes S. Philippines, No Tsunami Warning Issued
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (KUNA) -- A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Surigao del Norte province in southern Philippines Friday, shaking nearby areas but prompting no tsunami warnings, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
The tectonic quake occurred 13 kilometers southeast of General Luna town at a depth of 10 kilometers, as authorities warned of possible aftershocks and minor damage, said Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) in a press release.
It initially measured the quake at magnitude 6.2 before revising its downward, adding that it followed a series of strong tremors in Davao Oriental last week and Cebu in September.
Last week, two powerful quakes measuring 7.4 and 6.7 struck eastern Mindanao, killing at least eight people, while a 6.9-magnitude quake in Cebu days earlier left 76 dead and damaged or destroyed about 72,000 homes.
Meanwhile, the Philippines lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", a zone of frequent seismic activity stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia to the Pacific basin. (end)
