Ukrainian delegation, Rubio prepare for Trump-Zelensky meeting

(MENAFN) A Ukrainian delegation met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss preparations for the upcoming meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump in Washington, DC later this week.

Head of Ukraine’s presidential office Andriy Yermak wrote on social media that the talks focused on the design of a long-term security architecture “not only for Ukraine but for all of Europe.” He added:
“The leadership of the United States and personally President Donald Trump made peace in the Middle East possible. This is the kind of vision the world — and Ukraine in particular — needs today.”

Yermak also noted that discussions covered “steps that could compel Russia to end its war.”

The Ukrainian delegation, led by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, arrived in Washington on Monday. Other participants included National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, First Deputy Foreign Minister Serhii Kyslytsia, and Ukraine’s Ambassador to the US Olha Stefanishyna.

President Zelenskyy confirmed that he will meet Trump on Friday, with air defense and long-range capabilities among the main agenda items. In an evening address on Wednesday, Zelenskyy said Kyiv had completed preparations for the meeting, emphasizing both military and economic measures that could help bring the war in Ukraine closer to an end.
He stated:
“(Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s revenues must be reduced, and that will increase global security. And tools like Patriots and Tomahawks can help lay a long-term foundation for peace.”

Earlier this month, Trump expressed “disappointment” with Putin for not ending the over three-and-a-half-year war and said he was close to deciding on providing long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Kyiv, a request Zelenskyy first made in September. Russian President Putin has warned that supplying Tomahawks to Ukraine could “destroy” US-Russian ties and escalate the conflict to a “completely new, qualitatively new stage.”
