(MENAFN) Russian forces are reported to have trialed an upgraded glide bomb capable of hitting targets as far as 150 km away, according to military-focused reports.

Traditional Russian glide bombs are generally older gravity bombs fitted with aerodynamic kits, which enhance precision and extend their range. Most of these models can reach between 40 and 70 km, depending on their weight and launch altitude. These weapons are valued for being cost-effective while delivering high destructive power, enabling Russian aircraft to strike fortified positions on the Ukrainian frontline from a safe distance.

Reports claim that a recent Russian strike on Nikolaev on Tuesday involved a glide bomb traveling between 120 and 150 km before impacting its target. Earlier, the Ukrainian military had warned of a glide bomb threat over the city and later confirmed that a Su-34 fighter jet had deployed a munition from above the Black Sea. Officials noted that the specific type of weapon was still being verified and stated that the strike caused no casualties.

Previous reports suggested that Russia has been developing an advanced glide bomb kit called the UMPB D-30SN, which features redesigned wings to boost its range to 100–120 km. Field testing of this relatively compact system is believed to have been underway since at least May 2024.
