Pakistan, Malaysia reaffirm their stance on supporting Palestinians

(MENAFN) Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed his country’s firm support for the Palestinian cause on Tuesday, emphasizing that the freedom, dignity, and well-being of Palestinians are “a primary concern for Pakistan.”

Speaking after attending the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Sharif wrote on X: “InshaAllah (God willing), the establishment of a strong and viable Palestinian state with pre-1967 borders and Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital remains the bedrock of Pakistan’s Middle East policy and will remain so.”

He praised US President Donald Trump for his role in ending hostilities in Gaza, stating: “The most important priority for Pakistan was the immediate cessation of the genocidal campaign imposed on Gaza.” Sharif added, “The Trump presidency is anchored in him promising that he would make it stop and delivering on that promise.”

The summit in Egypt on Monday marked the conclusion of Israel’s two-year military campaign in Gaza, bringing temporary relief to the war-torn region.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that Kuala Lumpur is ready to contribute peacekeeping troops to Gaza if requested by the UN, the Arab League, or the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. “I agree that a peacekeeping mission is among the best guarantees to ensure security in Gaza,” he told parliament. Malaysia has historically deployed forces whenever international peacekeeping missions required support.

Indonesia has also pledged to send 20,000 troops for a similar peacekeeping effort in Gaza.
Earlier Monday, Palestinians held in Israeli prisons began to be released after Hamas freed all 20 remaining Israeli captives in Gaza. The second phase of the US-brokered deal includes establishing a new governing structure in Gaza, forming a multinational force, and disarming Hamas.

Since October 2023, Israeli strikes have killed over 67,800 Palestinians, primarily women and children, leaving much of Gaza devastated and uninhabitable.
