China calls for increased support for women
(MENAFN) China’s President Xi Jinping on Monday urged the international community to support women’s development, pledging $10 million to the UN Women fund. Speaking at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing, Xi emphasized that advancing women’s rights is a shared global responsibility and outlined four proposals to strengthen international cooperation on this front.
Marking the 30th anniversary of the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, Xi noted that women still face “complex challenges” and proposed creating a joint governance framework to safeguard women’s rights and expand global collaboration.
He also announced that over the next five years, China will contribute an additional $10 million to UN Women and allocate $100 million from the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund for projects promoting women’s and girls’ development. Priority initiatives include 1,000 small-scale livelihood projects and training and exchange programs for 50,000 women.
Additionally, Xi said China would establish a global center for women’s capacity-building to work with countries and international organizations in cultivating talented female professionals.
