Chinese Officials Evacuate Hikers from Everest
(MENAFN) Chinese authorities have successfully evacuated 580 trekkers from the eastern flanks of Mount Everest, according to a report from state-run media on Wednesday.
The group of hikers, along with more than 300 support personnel—comprising local guides and yak herders—have safely reached Qudeng township and surrounding regions, according to a Chinese news agency, which cited local government representatives.
Earlier reports on Sunday indicated that at least one trekker had perished, and nearly 1,000 individuals were stranded after an unexpected snowstorm swept through Tibet and Qinghai over the weekend, blocking access routes and causing tents to collapse.
The heavy snowfall began on Saturday evening in Dingri, impacting those hiking on mountain paths near Qudeng.
In reaction, the Dingri County administration promptly mobilized emergency response teams to reestablish communication lines and conduct rescue efforts within the affected areas.
On Sunday, officials from Dingri County declared the temporary shutdown of several tourist attractions, including the Mount Qomolangma scenic region, as a precautionary measure due to the harsh weather conditions.
