Former French Premier Supports Early Presidential Vote
(MENAFN) Former French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe expressed on Tuesday his preference for holding an early presidential election once France finalizes its budget.
He suggested that President Emmanuel Macron should take the initiative in this process to reinforce his leadership.
Philippe explained in an interview with a broadcaster that it would be commendable for Macron to propose a candidate for prime minister tasked specifically with managing day-to-day affairs and ensuring the budget is approved.
After France secures a budget, Philippe believes Macron should then announce his decision to call an early presidential election.
Despite advocating for this course of action, Philippe was clear that he opposes forcing the president out of office prematurely.
He emphasized that it is not appropriate to “force a president of the republic to leave,” warning that such a move would be abrupt and damaging.
Philippe warned that an immediate resignation by the president would have serious negative consequences, as it could disrupt the conditions necessary for holding a proper presidential election.
This statement came shortly after Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu resigned on Monday, becoming the fifth prime minister to step down in under two years. Lecornu’s departure followed mounting criticism regarding the newly formed Cabinet.
The resignation also intensified criticism aimed at President Macron.
During an interview with a news broadcaster, Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally, described Macron’s resignation as a “wise” choice.
She additionally urged Macron to dissolve parliament, calling this action “absolutely unavoidable.”
