Dr Cameron Shackell completed his undergraduate degree in Economics at UQ, his Master of Letters in Applied Linguistics at ANU, and his PhD in Semiotics and Information Technology at QUT. He is primarily a Sessional Academic at the QUT School of Information Systems. But he also works one day a week as CEO of Equate IT Consulting Pty Ltd, a firm using AI to analyse brands and trademarks under the name GeneriTrend.

Cameron's research interests include semiotic theory, artificial intelligence, data science, branding and marketing, trademark evidence, and information economics. He has written for World Trademark Review and Brandingmag, and has been interviewed numerous times on ABC Radio on subjects as diverse as the rebranding of Twitter to X, AI and creativity, prompt engineering, Noam Chomsky, and the pricing and marketing of non-alcoholic "nolo" drinks.
