Geta Thunberg to be deported by Israel to Greece
(MENAFN) Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is scheduled to be deported to Greece on Monday after being detained aboard the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, an Israeli news agency reported on Sunday.
Thunberg will be deported alongside Greek nationals who also participated in the flotilla, the report said. In total, 165 activists are expected to be on the same flight.
She was among more than 400 activists, parliamentarians, and lawyers detained by Israeli forces on Wednesday while attempting to breach the naval blockade of Gaza. Some detainees have already been deported, while legal proceedings remain ongoing for others.
According to correspondence seen by a news agency, Thunberg informed Swedish officials that she had been kept in a cell with bedbugs and received inadequate food and water.
The newspaper also quoted a detainee who alleged that Israeli forces forced Thunberg to hold flags for photographs.
Other participants supported the claims of mistreatment. Turkish activist Ersin Celik told a news agency that Israeli forces "severely tortured Greta before our eyes" and "made her crawl and made her kiss the Israeli flag." Italian journalist Lorenzo D'Agostino said she was "wrapped in the Israeli flag and paraded like a trophy."
