Shura Council, UNOCT Join Hands For Global Conference
(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Global Parliamentary Conference on Counter-Terrorism and the Prevention of Violent Extremism is scheduled to take place in Istanbul on Oct 7-8, a statement said yesterday. Hosted by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), with the support of the Shura Council of Qatar, the event will bring together more than 100 participants from across the world.
The participants will include parliamentarians as well as representatives of international parliamentary assemblies, United Nations entities, civil society organisations, and academia.
The conference will serve as a platform for legislators to share experiences and develop effective parliament-led responses to prevent and counter evolving terrorist threats, in compliance with international law, including international human rights law.
The event will also address the nexus between terrorism and organised crime, gender sensitive approaches to prevent and counter terrorism, and the misuse of emerging technologies by terrorist actors, including artificial intelligence, encrypted communications, and online platforms.
The outcomes of the conference will inform the development of a reference document compiling effective legislative practices and model provisions on priority issues, which will contribute to the Ninth Review of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in 2026, the statement from UNOCT added.
