(MENAFN) Starmer wants to modify the interpretation of international law that stops unsuccessful asylum applicants. As he wants to halt their removal because they could face transfer to inferior prisons or healthcare systems.

The PM informed a news agency that he did not want to "tear down" human rights laws, but he is prepared to re-examine article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, the provision that offers protection against abuse and humiliating treatment.

The PM stated that recent mass migration requires a change in approach, while clarifying that asylum should continue to be offered to those truly escaping persecution.

His statement was made after the Home Secretary proposed new, stricter rules regarding migrants who wants to have unlimited leave to stay.

During a radio interview, he was questioned about a specific deportation case: that of a Brazilian paedophile who effectively argued that the prison conditions in Brazil would be worse than those in a British facility.
