Spain Urges Respect For Safety, Rights Of Citizens On Sumud Flotilla
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
MADRID, Oct 2 (KUNA) -- Spain called for respect for the physical safety and rights of Spanish citizens aboard the "Sumud Flotilla," affirming that the flotilla is a peaceful and humanitarian civil society initiative.
In a statement issued last night, the Spanish Foreign Ministry affirmed Spain's continued call to end the war in Gaza, allow large-scale humanitarian aid entry, release all detainees, and implement the two-state solution for peace.
It added that a "Permanent Monitoring Unit" has been established to follow flotilla developments, noting Minister Jose Manuel Albares is coordinating with counterparts from countries with nationals aboard, and with occupation authorities and EU mission in occupied Tel Aviv.
The statement noted that Spain's Foreign Ministry, its embassy to the occupying entity, and the consulates in Jerusalem and Cyprus's capital Nicosia are closely monitoring the flotilla's status and are fully prepared to provide necessary diplomatic and consular protection.
Minister Albares stated Thursday that he summoned the occupation's Charge de Affairs in Madrid, protesting the detainment of citizens on board on the flotilla.
In a TV interview, Albares affirmed that they are peaceful citizens, with a humanitarian aim and are no threat to the Israeli occupation whatsoever, adding that they were practicing their right to safe passage with full diplomatic protection. (end)
