China Backs South Africa’s G20 Leadership
(MENAFN) China has voiced its endorsement of South Africa’s G20 presidency as Pretoria prepares to host the summit of the group’s top leaders this November.
This event marks the first occasion that the annual meeting will be held on African soil.
The summit, planned for 22–23 November at the Nasrec Expo Centre, will convene leaders from the world’s most powerful economies, alongside representatives from the African Union and other invited attendees.
The gathering will center around the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” highlighting South Africa’s focus on inclusive development, food security, and innovation — particularly in the area of artificial intelligence governance.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasized that these topics are crucial for both Africa and the broader developing world.
He described the summit as a significant platform to elevate the concerns of the Global South on the international stage.
During a ceremony in Johannesburg celebrating the 76th anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, Consul General Pan Qingjiang characterized the China-South Africa relationship as “comrades plus brothers.”
“We are both important members of the Global South. Under the leadership of the two heads-of-state, the all-round strategic cooperative partnership in a new era between China and South Africa has continuously borne new fruits,” Pan stated.
