Colin Mason joined the Adam Smith Business School as Professor of Entrepreneurship in October 2012 after holding professorships in Economic Geography at the University of Southampton and in Entrepreneurship at Strathclyde Business School at the University of Strathclyde. He retired in September 2023 but continues to be research active in his capacity as an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow.

He has also held visiting positions at: University of Ottawa, Memorial University of Newfoundland (both Canada), Flinders University of South Australia, University of Adelaide, University of South Australia, Universidad Nacional de General Sarmiento (Argentina), London Business, School, Saint Mary's University, Halifax (Canada), University of Canterbury, University of Otago and University of Auckland (New Zealand).

Colin's research and teaching are in the area of entrepreneurship and regional development. He teaches courses in entrepreneurship; business start up; social and community entrepreneurship; and corporate entrepreneurship and innovation. His long-term research focus is entrepreneurial finance, specifically business angel investing. He has also undertaken research on home-based businesses, high growth firms and entrepreneurial ecosystems.

Colin is the founder of Venture Capital, an international journal of entrepreneurial finance (Taylor and Francis); he stepped down as Editor in 2021. He is also on the editorial boards of several journals.

He is co-editor of Handbook on Research on Venture Capital. Volume 2: A Globalising Industry (2012), Handbook on Research on Venture Capital. Volume 3: Business Angel (2016) (both with Hans Landström), Handbook on Research on Crowdfunding (2019) with Hans Landström and Annaleena Parhankangas, all published by Edward Elgar Publishing and The Dynamics of Entrepreneurial Ecosystems (2022) (with Allan O'Connor, Morgan P Miles and David Audretsch, published by Routledge.
