Ukraine Warns: Zaporizhzhia NPP Could Lose Power Within 10 Days

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) According to Ukrinform, the ministry's press service reported this on Facebook .

“The Ministry of Energy, in cooperation with international partners, urges the global community to increase pressure on the Russian Federation to prevent a nuclear disaster and return the occupied plant under Ukraine's control as soon as possible,” the statement reads.

The ministry emphasized that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed the dangerous situation at the ZNPP.

“The IAEA officially confirmed the hazardous situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which, due to the actions of the occupiers, has been without a primary power source for ten days. According to the agency, the plant in occupied territory is currently running solely on backup diesel generators, and the current fuel reserves for their operation will last only 10 days,” the ministry said.

Under the instructions of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ministry of Energy is working together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and international organizations to provide comprehensive information on the actions of Russian occupiers at the ZNPP, which pose a direct threat to nuclear and radiological safety not only in Ukraine but in the entire region.

As reported, the IAEA is in contact with both Ukraine and Russia to facilitate repair of the damaged power line and the fastest possible restoration of external electricity supply to the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP, which has been operating solely on emergency diesel generators for over a week.

The last external power line to the ZNPP was disconnected on September 23. The backup line was cut by Russian forces in May, and since then the occupiers have not provided safety guarantees for repair crews from Ukraine's NEK Ukrenergo to restore it.

Energoatom stated that the external power line to the Zaporizhzhia NPP on territory controlled by Ukraine is operational. Russians are deliberately refusing to reconnect the plant to the power supply while continuing a disinformation campaign against Ukraine.
