Amman, Oct.1 (Petra) -- Population estimates indicated that Jordan's total population reached approximately 11.734 million by the end of 2024, with seniors aged 60 and above accounting for 5.5 percent of the total population, 5.3 percent among males and 5.7 percent among females.
Data from the Department of Statistics, released on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons on Wednesday, showed that the highest concentration of elderly residents is in the Capital at 6.2 percent, followed by Ajloun and Karak at 5.3 percent each. The percentages in Balqa, Madaba, Irbid, and Ma'an were equal at 5.2 percent, while Mafraq recorded the lowest share at 4.2 percent.
Life expectancy at birth in Jordan stands at 75.3 years, with females expected to live 77.0 years compared to 73.8 years for males, reflecting significant improvements in the healthcare sector that have contributed to reduced mortality rates and longer lifespans.
The 2024 Labor Force Survey revealed that 18.1 percent of Jordanian seniors are illiterate, while 15.1 percent hold a bachelor's degree or higher. The majority of older adults are married or have been married, accounting for 97.9 percent of the senior population.
Regarding technology use, the 2023 survey on information technology use within households found that 9.7 percent of seniors aged 60–64 use computers, compared to 5.4 percent among those aged 65 and above. Male seniors show higher computer usage rates than females, with 14.2 percent of males aged 60–64 using computers versus 5.3 percent of females in the same age group.
The Department of Statistics joins the world in commemorating the International Day of Older Persons by highlighting key indicators related to the elderly, including their distribution by governorate, gender, and life expectancy at birth.
Aging is expected to be one of the most significant social transformations affecting all sectors, including the labor market, financial markets, and demand for goods and services such as housing, transportation, and social protection.
The Jordanian government constitutionally affirms the protection of seniors, reflected recently in two key documents: Jordan 2025 (a national vision and strategy) and the Comprehensive National Human Rights Plan 2016–2025. Among the government's achievements is the establishment of clinics providing direct medical supervision and healthcare in nursing homes. According to the national strategy, individuals aged 60 and above are classified as seniors within the population.
