Flotilla ship states Israeli navy interception attempts failed
(MENAFN) Organizers of the Global Sumud Flotilla heading toward Gaza reported early Wednesday that Israeli naval efforts to intercept the convoy were unsuccessful, and the vessels continued their journey despite attempts to block them.
Wael Naouar, a spokesperson for the Maghreb branch of the flotilla, stated via social media that the Israeli navy first tried to halt the lead ship, Alma, but the remaining ships sailed past without interference. A second attempt to redirect attention toward another lead vessel, Sirius, was similarly ineffective.
“The Zionist (Israeli) vessels today intercepted Alma, the lead ship, but the other ships ignored Alma and continued toward Gaza,” Naouar said.
“Even if you stop 47 vessels, the 48th will continue on to Gaza,” he added, describing the interception efforts as a test of the flotilla’s determination.
Earlier, a large Israeli warship was observed near the convoy as organizers reported heightened alert at sea. Contact with the Alma was briefly lost but later restored. According to a correspondent on board, an Israeli vessel came within five feet of Alma, disrupting its communications and engine systems and rendering them temporarily inoperative.
