Mexico Reveals: Trump Deported 109,000 Nationals Since January 20
(MENAFN) Mexico's government revealed updated data on Thursday showing that 109,000 of its nationals have been repatriated to the United States since President Donald Trump began his second term in office.
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the figure reflects deportations under the Trump administration from January 20 onwards. She also highlighted a drastic 91% decline in the number of migrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border during this period.
Sheinbaum shared historical statistics on U.S. deportations, dating back to the administration of former President Bill Clinton in the 1990s. She identified Clinton as the U.S. president with the highest deportation numbers, noting, "with one year alone, 1.1 million Mexicans were repatriated."
According to the figures, Clinton’s presidency (1993-2001) saw the largest deportation program in U.S. history, with over 7.4 million Mexicans deported. Following Clinton, Republican President George W. Bush deported 4.65 million individuals during his two terms.
In comparison, Trump’s first term from 2016 to 2020 saw the lowest number of deportations in recent history, with 766,055 Mexicans sent back to Mexico. This figure is far lower than that of his Democratic predecessors, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, who oversaw 2.85 million and 891,503 deportations, respectively.
Trump has consistently criticized Obama and Biden for their "weak" immigration policies.
Since the start of his second term, Trump has deported 109,000 Mexicans, including 82,049 in the past six months alone.
Sheinbaum defended her administration’s approach to immigration, stating that since assuming office on October 1, 2024, migrant encounters at the northern border have dropped by 91%. As of December 2023, U.S. border authorities reported 15,000 daily encounters. According to Sheinbaum, this number has now decreased to between 200 and 300 encounters per day.
In response to Trump's threats of tariffs on Mexican exports, Sheinbaum pledged to help manage migration flows to the U.S., including deploying military personnel to the northern border as part of her government's strategy.
