Reports say FBI had hundreds of “plainclothes agents” present during Capitol riot

(MENAFN) Reports indicate that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had approximately 274 “plainclothes agents” present during the January 6 Capitol riot, according to sources cited in media outlets.

This claim appears to challenge the bureau’s previous denials of a significant undercover presence during the 2021 unrest. Late last year, the US Department of Justice Office of Inspector General stated that the FBI had no “undercover employees” in the crowds but confirmed that 26 confidential informants were present. Four of these informants reportedly entered the Capitol alongside the protesters, while three were sent to Washington to report on “domestic terrorism subjects who were possibly attending the event” afterward.

The report noted that the distinction between “undercover employees” and “plainclothes agents” could account for differences in the official account and the new claims.

The revelations drew criticism from President Donald Trump, who vowed to investigate the matter and hold “dirty cops and crooked politicians” accountable. Trump suggested that some FBI personnel may have acted as “agitators and insurrectionists” during the January 6 events.

“I want to know who each and every one of these so-called ‘Agents’ are, and what they were up to on that now ‘Historic’ Day. Many Great American Patriots were made to pay a very big price only for the love of their Country. I owe this investigation of ‘Dirty Cops and Crooked Politicians’ to them! Christopher Wray, the then Director of the FBI, has some major explaining to do,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
