S. Korea leader calls on international community to safe usage of AI
(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday called on the international community to “unite” in promoting the “responsible use” of artificial intelligence (AI), urging the UN Security Council to take a leading role in coordinating a collective global approach.
While chairing an open debate at the Council on AI and international peace and security, Lee—becoming the first South Korean president to lead such a meeting—encouraged collaboration among governments, academia, industry, and civil society to foster innovation under the principles of “AI for all” and “inclusive and human-centric AI.”
With concerns rising over AI and other advanced technologies being used in ways that could threaten security and human rights, Lee stressed the importance of unified international action. “To turn the changes of the AI era — where light and shadow coexist — into opportunities, it is essential for the international community to unite and uphold the principle of 'responsible use of AI,'” he said.
Lee also pledged that South Korea will assume a “greater” role in addressing AI-related challenges, emphasizing that the Security Council must evaluate the evolving international security landscape and develop collective responses.
As the chair of the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, the president stated that Seoul will advance a global initiative aimed at ensuring AI innovation benefits humanity.
“Eighty years ago, the UN's central concern at its founding was how the international community would manage the emerging threat of nuclear weapons,” he said. “Now it is time to explore new governance structures to address the new challenges and threats posed by AI.”
