Trump Says Ukraine War Tarnishes Russia’s Global Reputation
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump sharply criticized China and India on Tuesday, accusing them of financing Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine by purchasing Russian oil. Speaking at the annual UN General Assembly, Trump highlighted the negative impact the extended war is having on Russia’s global reputation.
“Everyone thought Russia would win this war in three days, but it didn't work out that way. It's not making Russia look good. It's making them look bad,” Trump stated.
He described the conflict as initially expected to be “just a quick little skirmish” but noted it has dragged on for three and a half years. “How many more lives will be needlessly lost on both sides?” he asked, emphasizing the urgent human cost.
Trump singled out major global powers for continuing energy trade with Russia. “China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil,” he asserted.
The president also criticized NATO countries for failing to sever energy ties with Russia, stating: “Even NATO countries haven’t cut off much Russian energy and Russian energy products ... They're funding the war against themselves.”
Calling the situation “embarrassing,” Trump condemned allies for “buying oil and gas from Russia while they are fighting Russia.”
He warned of new sanctions aimed at ending the conflict, saying such measures “would stop the bloodshed ... very quickly” if Russia refuses to halt the war. However, he stressed the importance of European cooperation, telling the assembly: “For those tariffs to be effective, European nations, all of you (who) are gathered here right now, would have to join us in adopting the exact same measures.”
