New York - Standing before more than 150 world leaders and senior United Nations officials at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a blistering critique of the international body while touting his administration's achievements and personal role in global diplomacy.
In a speech marked by sharp criticism, nationalist rhetoric, and sweeping claims, Trump accused the UN of failing to live up to its potential, dismissing its efforts as little more than“empty words.”
“I've always said the UN has such tremendous, tremendous potential. But it's not even coming close to living up to that potential,” Trump declared.“For the most part, at least for now, all they seem to do is write a really strongly worded letter and then never follow that letter. It's empty words and empty words don't solve wars.”
Bragging on U.S. Strength
Wasting little time, Trump pivoted to his familiar theme of American exceptionalism, hailing the United States as“the hottest country anywhere in the world” and“the best country on Earth to do business.” He claimed that under his leadership the U.S. economy is“bigger and even better” than during his first term, which he described as“the greatest ... in the history of the world.”
He further asserted that the U.S. is“respected again like never before,” drawing a sharp contrast with his predecessor, former President Joe Biden. At least twice during the address, Trump attacked Biden, continuing a pattern of injecting domestic political rivalries into an international forum where such partisanship is typically avoided.
