Macron Says France Committed to Achieving Climate Goals

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron reinforced France’s firm dedication to achieving its climate commitments during his address at Wednesday’s UN Climate Change Summit in New York, urging swift worldwide efforts to eliminate fossil fuels, preserve biodiversity, and overhaul international climate financing.

Macron emphasized that France has adhered to its carbon budget since 2017 and reaffirmed the nation’s trajectory toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

He announced that France will submit its updated nationally determined contributions (NDCs) before year-end, supported by investments from both private and public sectors.

“We must rise to the occasion,” Macron declared, underscoring the critical importance of the upcoming 30th United Nations Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP30) in November as a pivotal moment for global climate progress. He also expressed strong backing for Brazil’s leadership under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and the international negotiators preparing for the summit.

Macron outlined France’s key priorities, including a phased elimination of fossil fuels, enforceable targets to cut methane emissions under the Global Methane Pledge, and intensified efforts toward ecosystem restoration.

He stressed the vital importance of protecting oceans and primary forests—especially the Amazon, noting that French Guiana positions France within the Amazon basin—and announced plans for new financing solutions aimed at preserving these critical environments.

Highlighting advancements in biodiversity governance, Macron pointed to the ratification of the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ) and urged more countries to join the moratorium on deep-sea mining. He reaffirmed France’s commitment to the global “30x30” biodiversity conservation goal established in Montreal.

Regarding climate finance, Macron spotlighted the European Union as the leading global donor, committing €28 billion ($32.8 billion), with France and its development agency contributing €7 billion.
