WHO Announces First Recoveries From Ebola In DRC


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GENEVA, Sept 18 (KUNA) -- Director General of the World Health Organization Tedros Ghebreyesus announced on Thursday the beginning of the recovery of Ebola patients in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) with the first two cases having fully recovered and discharged from hospital.
This comes two weeks after the government declared an outbreak near the town of (Bulape).
At a press conference held in Geneva, Ghebreyesus explained that the total number of reported cases has reached 48 confirmed and probable infections, including 31 deaths.
He stressed that the efforts of the government, the Ministry of Health and international partners have contributed to containing the situation and mitigating its severity.
He noted that vaccination campaigns continue to protect at-risk groups and frontline workers.
Ghebreyesus also launched an appeal to raise USD 21 million to support response efforts in DRC, emphasizing that "investment at this stage will help save lives and stop the spread of the outbreak". (end)
