KISR Re-DESIGNATED Center Cooperating With The IAEA


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) VIENNA, Sept 18 (KUNA) -- Director General of Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research Dr. Faisal Salman Al-Humaidan declared on Thursday KISR was re-designated as center cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for coping with marine and coastal pollution for the 2025-2028 period.
The re-designation of KISR as a cooperative center with the agency was declared during the IAEA 69th conference, currently held in Vienna.
Al-Humaidan added that a relevant agreement, signed at the IAEA headquarters, guarantees an official cooperation framework focusing on updating scientific research, innovating monitoring devices and building regional potentials for combating marine pollution.
This step came following years of fruitful cooperation between KISR's scientists and the agency, Al-Humaidan said, adding that the pivotal role of the institute in the initiative "Plastics NUTEC" was the corner stone for boosting isotopes and developing radiation technology for recylcing plastic waste.
KISR's role was not restricted to providing data for it also covered developing tools and criteria that would help the international scientific community to communicate and integrate, he said, adding that KISR's re-designation reflected Kuwait's leading role in the realm of environmental sciences nnd adherence to regional cooperation.
KISR has developed standard references for nanoplastics currently used by the IAEA. It has also contributed to developing unified protocols to extract nanoplastics from complex specimen like sand and living creatures.
Al-Humaidan added that the center would incubate training sessions for scientists from Asia, the Pacific and the whole world for know-how transfer and advanced technology in evironmental evaluation.
The re-appointment of KISR as a center that cooperates with the IAE is a source of great pride for Kuwait, he said.
Al-Humaidan lauded efforts by the former national liaison officer, Dr. Nader Al-Awadi, as well the efforts by the current officer. He expressed deep gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the efforts exerted by the Kuwait permanent representative to the UN in Vienna Ambassador Talal Al-Fassam, the embassy staff for boosting the cooperation with the IAEA.
These achievements come under the umbrella of the great support lended by the political leadership namely Their Highnesses the Amir, the Crown Prince and the Prime Minister. (end)
