U.S.-China Talks for Trump's China Visit in "Final Stage"
(MENAFN) Negotiations between Washington and Beijing regarding US President Donald Trump's potential state visit to China are now in the "final stage," according to a report by media on Wednesday.
This update follows the fourth round of trade talks between the two countries, held recently in Spain, and ahead of an expected phone call between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday.
Earlier, on June 5, Trump and Xi engaged in a phone conversation. Trump has since called the Madrid discussions a success, with both nations tentatively agreeing on the future of TikTok's operations in the United States.
The report indicates that the talks also addressed other key issues, including the trade of critical minerals and the ongoing fentanyl crisis.
If the visit proceeds, it will mark the first time since 2017 that a sitting US president visits China.
Sources familiar with the negotiations have told South China Morning Post that "significant progress" has been made and both sides are nearing completion of the deal. "There are a few small loose ends. But the major blocks are already resolved. Things are taking shape," one source explained.
In early September, Beijing reportedly extended a formal invitation to Trump for the state visit, signaling that the plans are "more or less confirmed" and that preparations have reached an advanced stage.
“There is strong political will from both sides to make it happen. Both sides want to present this major diplomatic event as a big win for their domestic audiences,” a source stated.
The visit is likely to coincide with the APEC summit in South Korea, scheduled from October 31 to November 1.
Since establishing full diplomatic ties in January 1979, the US and China have become key global trade partners. In 2024, the total value of goods exchanged between the two countries reached $582 billion, according to US government data.
