Japan Posts Drop in U.S. Exports for Fifth Month
(MENAFN) Japan’s exports to the United States declined for the fifth month running in August, largely driven by a steep 28.4 percent drop in automobile shipments amid ongoing U.S. tariff measures, government data revealed on Wednesday.
According to the Finance Ministry, exports to the U.S. totaled 1.3855 trillion yen (approximately 9.5 billion U.S. dollars) last month, marking a 13.8 percent decrease compared to the same period last year. The sharp fall was primarily due to the plunge in auto exports, which fell by more than a quarter.
On the other side, imports from the U.S. surged 11.6 percent to 1.0615 trillion yen, representing the first rise in seven months, driven by increased purchases of aircraft.
Japan’s overall exports in August reached 8.4252 trillion yen, slipping slightly by 0.1 percent year-on-year.
The trade balance recorded a deficit of 242.5 billion yen, marking the second consecutive month of negative figures.
