China Warns Europe Against Agreements Undermining Beijing Interests

(MENAFN) China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, issued a stern warning to European nations on Friday, cautioning against "mistaken" agreements that could undermine Beijing’s interests.

During a meeting with Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger in Vienna, Wang emphasized that maintaining robust and stable relations between China and the EU benefits both parties and their populations, as stated by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Wang addressed Europe's current challenges, asserting that these issues do not originate from China. He reiterated Beijing's backing for Europe’s "pursuit of true strategic autonomy" but firmly opposed any efforts to "harm China's interests in exchange for deals."

"China hopes Austria will play a constructive role in encouraging a rational and pragmatic EU policy toward China," Wang stated.

His comments followed earlier remarks from US President Donald Trump, who had urged European leaders to halt imports of Russian oil in a bid to exert pressure on Moscow to end its ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump had also called for economic sanctions on China for allegedly supporting Russia's war efforts.

In response, Meinl-Reisinger conveyed Austria’s openness to strengthening bilateral cooperation and emphasized Vienna’s role in fostering "constructive dialogue between Europe and China" to ensure the "healthy development of bilateral relations."

The two diplomats also touched on critical global issues, including the war in Ukraine, Middle East tensions, and climate change, agreeing on the need to intensify efforts for peaceful conflict resolution.

In a separate meeting with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen, Wang reiterated Beijing's stance on Taiwan, reaffirming China's goal for Taiwan's "return" to the mainland. President Van der Bellen reaffirmed Austria’s commitment to the one-China policy.

The leaders also explored potential collaboration in trade, investment, and other fields.

Taiwan, which Beijing considers a breakaway province, has long rejected China's sovereignty claim and maintains a position of independence since 1949.

Wang’s diplomatic tour will continue with visits to Slovenia and Poland after concluding his stay in Austria.
