Vessels Set Sail from Greece to Break Gaza Blockade

(MENAFN) Ships departed from the port of Syros Island on Sunday, heading for Gaza as part of the Global Sumud Fleet, a major international flotilla of civilian vessels aiming to breach Israel's blockade and deliver critical humanitarian aid.

The Oksigono, with an all-Greek crew, and the Ilektra, carrying volunteers from Greece and other nations, are among the latest additions to the growing fleet.

Throughout the day, the island saw numerous support events, with hundreds gathering at the port to show solidarity and uplift the morale of the departing crews. As the ships set sail, participants waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans like “Freedom for Gaza,” “Resistance will win,” and “Down with Israel.”

Representatives from March to Gaza Greece, a movement organizing pro-Palestinian initiatives, underscored the mission's primary aim: breaking Israel’s blockade on Gaza, rallying international support, and facilitating a secure route for humanitarian aid into the enclave.

The flotilla, they added, is a powerful statement of global solidarity, drawing attention to the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, which began taking shape last month, already includes vessels that departed from Barcelona, Spain, and Genoa, Italy. Organizers have called this mission unprecedented, noting its scale compared to past efforts that saw individual boats intercepted by Israel, with their passengers deported.

This convoy is the largest of its kind, determined to challenge the blockade and provide much-needed aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza, where conditions have grown dire due to Israel’s ongoing closure of all border crossings.

Since October 2023, Israel’s military operations in Gaza have killed nearly 65,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom were women and children. The relentless aerial bombardments have devastated the region, leaving it uninhabitable, fueling starvation, and contributing to the spread of disease.
