Microsoft has revealed Visual Studio 2026 Insiders, a major update to its flagship integrated development environment that weaves artificial intelligence into core workflows, boosts performance, and delivers a modernised user interface. The rollout introduces new features and channels aimed at enhancing developer productivity and addressing long-standing feedback.

Visual Studio 2026 integrates GitHub Copilot across the IDE to understand the coding context, make suggestions, and automate repetitive tasks. Notable among the AI features are adaptive paste, which adjusts pasted code to match project style and conventions, and a Profiler Agent that identifies performance bottlenecks before pull requests are opened. For greater flexibility, developers can now link their own large language models using their API keys.

Performance has been raised substantially. Microsoft reports faster load times for large solutions, quicker build and debug cycles, and more responsive navigation in both x64 and Arm64 environments. Hot Reload for Razor projects has become more reliable, and memory use has been optimised for bigger, more complex codebases.

The visual design overhaul embraces Microsoft's Fluent UI. The refresh includes eleven new tinted themes, redesigned icons, clearer spacing, and a more approachable settings experience-Tools → Options gets replaced by a modernised dialog system with filtering and improved organisation. These changes are intended to reduce visual clutter and streamline development sessions.

Visual Studio 2026 offers expanded platform and language support. Built-in support is included for. NET 10 and C# 14, with C++ project templates now defaulting to C++20. The IDE maintains compatibility with extensions developed for Visual Studio 2022, and users can install VS 2026 side-by-side with earlier versions to avoid disrupting existing workflows.

Some developers have raised concerns that while the AI and design enhancements are substantial, the underlying architecture still depends in part on older frameworks. For example, the core process continues to run on the legacy. NET Framework, even though many of the child processes use. NET Core or later. This limit constrains how completely the new version can lean into performance and modernization.

Earlier editions of code coverage tools, which were restricted to the Enterprise edition, are now included in the Community and Professional editions-broadening access for smaller teams and individual developers.
