Indonesia Advances Nuclear Power Plant Target Date to 2029
(MENAFN) Indonesia has revised its timeline to bring its first on-grid nuclear power plant online, advancing the target date from 2032 to 2029, a top energy official announced on Wednesday.
The 250-megawatt facility is now a key element of the nation’s long-term energy roadmap, according to Yuliot Tanjung, Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. He confirmed that regulatory preparations are progressing swiftly.
"We are pushing this forward. Soon it will enter harmonization for enactment, and the regulations will take the form of a presidential regulation," Yuliot told reporters.
The official said the shift aligns with Indonesia’s broader goal of accelerating its energy transition away from fossil fuels.
By 2060, the country’s electricity generation capacity is expected to reach 443 gigawatts, with renewable sources projected to supply 79 percent of that total, he added.
