KABUL (Pajhwok): Nepali Prime Minister Sharma Oli has resigned following widespread violent protests that left at least 19 people dead.

According to reports, after the Nepalese government blocked access to major social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube last week, thousands of youth and students took to the streets in Kathmandu, the capital, and some major cities in the country to protest this action, as well as corruption and the economic crisis.

About 19 individuals have been killed and more than 100 others injured in these protests, and the Nepalese government subsequently lifted the ban on access to social media.

Reuters reported that Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned from his post today.

Oli wrote in a letter to President Ramchandra Paudel that he had submitted his resignation in order to resolve the political crisis and pave the way for a national dialogue.

According to the Reuters, the president accepted his resignation and efforts have begun to select a new prime minister.

Al Jazeera reported that protesters, defying curfew restrictions, entered the country's parliament and set fire to its building. Earlier, they also stormed the office of the country's largest party (Nepal Congress) and the homes of a number of prominent politicians.
