Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that the peace agreement reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia on August 8 in Washington is the sovereign right of both countries, while noting that its implementation“remains to be seen”, Azernews reports.

Speaking at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) on September 8, Lavrov said that Russia's approach to the South Caucasus has been consistent. He reiterated that Moscow's main goal in the region continues to be peace and cooperation.

The agreement, initialed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the presence of US President Donald Trump, includes provisions for a ceasefire, diplomatic relations, and the establishment of the Zangezur Corridor. Dubbed the“Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP), the corridor is designed to connect mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenian territory. It will be managed by a US-led consortium under a 99-year lease while fully respecting Armenian sovereignty.
