Trump Plans to Hold New Round of Discussions with Putin
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans for a new round of discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin later this week, with a focus likely on resolving the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump expressed optimism about ending the hostilities, declaring, “we’re going to get it done.” He confirmed that he would speak to Putin “very soon, over the next couple of days,” although specifics on the agenda were not disclosed.
While Moscow has yet to officially respond to the announcement, Russian officials have previously commended Trump’s administration for its diplomatic efforts and emphasized their openness to continued dialogue.
However, Trump admitted frustration over the situation, stating, “I am not thrilled with what’s happening there … I think it’s going to get settled.” He added that several European leaders would be visiting the U.S. “on Monday or Tuesday” for further talks related to the conflict.
Diplomatic exchanges between Washington and Moscow have been ramping up since Trump’s inauguration in January, with frequent rounds of negotiations and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff making multiple visits to Russia.
In mid-August, Trump and Putin held a landmark summit in Alaska. Although no formal ceasefire or breakthrough was reached, both leaders described the talks as productive. Trump later stated that Ukraine should not expect to join NATO or reclaim Crimea, which voted to join Russia in 2014 following the Western-backed coup in Kyiv.
Following the Alaska summit, Trump shifted away from immediate ceasefire demands, now advocating for a broader peace agreement. Russia has insisted that a durable settlement can only be achieved if Ukraine abandons its NATO aspirations, commits to demilitarization and denazification, and recognizes the altered territorial situation in the region.
Putin, during the summit, extended an invitation to Trump for a future meeting in Moscow. However, he clarified last week that while the invitation “is still on the table,” there are no current plans for another summit.
