Six Migrants Dead While Attempting Mediterranean Crossing To Spain

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Six undocumented migrants have died while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in an effort to reach Spain's southern coast, Spanish authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

Emergency services and civil protection teams in the Andalusian region recovered the bodies off the coast of Carboneras in the province of Almeria.

Spanish authorities believe the victims perished while traveling aboard several boats that reached the shoreline. The exact number of survivors from those vessels remains unknown.

Spain-particularly the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean-continues to serve as one of the main gateways to the European Union for migrants and asylum seekers from Africa. However, the number of arrivals has decreased compared to last year's peak.

According to the latest official figures, nearly 24,000 undocumented migrants have arrived in Spain so far this year, marking a drop of approximately one-third compared to the same period in 2024.
