Xi, Putin state responsibility to preserve historic memory of WWII martyrs

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the importance of preserving the memory of their nations’ sacrifices in defeating the Axis powers during the Second World War. The leaders met in Beijing on Tuesday ahead of a military parade marking the war’s end on Wednesday. Earlier this year, Xi had visited Moscow to take part in Russia’s Victory Day celebrations on May 9.

Xi described the mutual visits as “a good bilateral tradition and showcase the great responsibility that China and Russia hold as major victor states in World War II and permanent members of the UN Security Council.” He stressed the need to safeguard the historical truth of the wartime achievements.

Putin praised the forthcoming Chinese commemorations, expressing confidence that the People’s Liberation Army would conduct the event “with its usual brilliance.” He echoed Xi’s call to maintain the memory of the war.

“Our ancestors, our fathers and grandfathers have paid a huge price for peace and freedom,” Putin said. “We remember that. That is the foundation of our achievements today and in the future.”

China’s conflict with Imperial Japan, beginning in 1937, is estimated to have resulted in 15 to 20 million deaths, including combatants from both communist and nationalist forces as well as civilians. The Soviet Union suffered around 27 million military and civilian casualties while defeating Nazi Germany following its invasion in June 1941.
