Australia rejects claims of wanting to please Israel by expelling Iranian ambassador
(MENAFN) The Australian government denied on Wednesday that its decision to expel the Iranian ambassador and suspend its embassy in Tehran was intended to please Israel, according to reports.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that Iran’s actions had “crossed a line,” following Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s accusation on Tuesday that Tehran had orchestrated antisemitic attacks in Australia since October 2023.
Albanese announced that Iranian Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi and three other officials were expelled after the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) uncovered “credible evidence” linking Iran to at least two attacks.
In response, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on social media that Canberra “should know better than to appease” the Israeli regime.
Wong rejected this assertion, expressing confidence in ASIO’s findings. “This is a violent attack on Australian soil against Australians. It cannot be countenanced. It's unacceptable,” she told national television.
