(MENAFN) India has completed a successful trial of its new integrated air defense system, intercepting and destroying three targets at different altitudes and distances, according to the Defense Ministry.

The tests follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of plans to safeguard the nation’s military and civilian infrastructure from aerial threats. Under the “Mission Sudarshan Chakra” initiative, India aims to develop a domestically produced air defense shield with integrated offensive capabilities within the next decade.

“During the flight-tests, three different targets including two high-speed fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicle targets and a multi-copter drone were simultaneously engaged and destroyed completely by the QRSAM, VSHORADS and the high-energy laser weapon system at different ranges and altitudes,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

QRSAM (Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile) and VSHORADS (Very Short Range Air Defense System) are core elements of India’s integrated air defense network. The system—including missile launchers, drone detection and neutralization technology, command and control units, and communication and radar systems—performed “flawlessly,” the ministry added.

Earlier this month, New Delhi approved defense acquisitions worth approximately $7.6 billion to enhance the armed forces’ operational capabilities. This package includes additional BrahMos missiles, armed drones, and modernization programs for existing equipment.
