Landi Kotal Traders Fear Economic Downturn As Afghan Repatriation Hits Market Activity
The return of Afghan refugees has started to negatively impact businesses in Landi Kotal Bazaar, leaving traders and local residents deeply concerned.
According to reports, 196 undocumented Afghan families were deported through the Torkham border on Monday, while hundreds more are waiting to return.
Traders say the exodus of Afghan customers has led to a significant decline in foot traffic, affecting sales and raising fears that many shops may soon shut down.

They estimate that daily business worth approximately Rs2.7 to 3 million was linked to Afghan buyers, which has now been severely disrupted.
Sources revealed that in the past 22 days alone, around 3,610 Afghan families have been deported, with nearly 800 individuals being sent back daily via Torkham.
The trader community has urged the government to provide immediate relief and support to local shopkeepers and businesses to fill the trade gap, warning that otherwise, the prices of essential commodities could soar further.
