Starvation in Sudan takes lives of forty-six people

(MENAFN) At least 46 individuals, the majority being women and children, have lost their lives to malnutrition in Sudan’s South Kordofan state over the past two months, according to medical reports, as hunger and shortages of healthcare worsen in the conflict-hit region.

The medical network stated that its teams “monitored 46 deaths in South Kordofan due to malnutrition during July and August, most of them women and children.”

It also emphasized: “More than 19,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women are in urgent need of supplementary nutrition.”

The organization denounced the deliberate use of hunger in warfare, describing it as “a crime against humanity and a war crime under international law,” while pointing to the devastating conditions in Kadugli and Dalanj.

Civilians have been trapped under siege conditions, with accusations directed at the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for enforcing a blockade. The group condemned “the continued siege and starvation of civilians” and called for “the immediate lifting of the blockade and the opening of safe humanitarian corridors to allow unrestricted delivery of food and medicine.”

An urgent appeal was made to “local, regional, and international authorities, the World Health Organization, and all relevant humanitarian agencies to intervene immediately to save the lives of pregnant and breastfeeding women and children before it is too late.”

Meanwhile, fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF has escalated across all three Kordofan states in recent months, worsening the humanitarian crisis.
