Putin aide confirms Russia returning remains of 1,000 troops to Ukraine
(MENAFN) Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky announced that Moscow has handed over the bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers, while Ukraine returned the remains of 19 Russian troops. The exchange was carried out under the terms of the Istanbul agreements, Medinsky said on Telegram.
Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed receipt of the 1,000 servicemen’s remains. The swap follows last week’s Anchorage summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, as well as Trump’s subsequent meetings in Washington with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and European leaders to discuss a potential conflict settlement.
Earlier, Russia pledged to repatriate the remains of over 6,000 Ukrainian troops in stages as part of humanitarian efforts, while Ukraine returned 79 Russian bodies. Putin has also indicated readiness to return another 3,000 Ukrainian remains in upcoming exchanges.
