(MENAFN) The upcoming summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump will be held at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage, Alaska, CNN reported, citing White House sources.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the leaders will meet in Alaska’s largest city on Friday to discuss the Ukraine conflict and broader bilateral issues but initially declined to specify the venue. CNN later reported that the military base was chosen due to its security capabilities, despite the administration’s preference to avoid using a US military installation. Summer tourism in Alaska limited alternative options.

Trump has described the summit as a “feel-out meeting” aimed at exploring potential resolutions to the Ukraine conflict, while also noting the economic and trade opportunities with Russia. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Moscow hopes the talks will help restore strained relations and address long-standing disputes, giving an “impulse to the normalization of bilateral relations.”

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson was established in 2010 through the merger of the US Air Force’s Elmendorf base and the US Army’s Fort Richardson. Located on Anchorage’s northern edge, it spans 339 square kilometers and hosts approximately 5,000 military personnel and civilians.
