Amman, Aug. 13 (Petra) – A medical team at Al Bashir Hospitals has successfully replanted the amputated limb of a 14-year-old girl who sustained a severe injury from a mechanical pump belt, marking a new milestone in the hospital's record of medical achievements.
Dr. Ali Abdallat, Director of Al Bashir Hospitals, said the girl was initially treated at Theban Governmental Hospital, where partial control of her injury was achieved. The hospital then coordinated directly with Al Bashir's vascular surgery team, which provided precise guidance for her transfer.
Upon arrival at the Specialized Surgery Center at Al Bashir Hospitals, the girl was immediately prepared for surgery. Abdallat highlighted that the center's vascular department for peripheral artery surgery and catheterization, supported by a reliable medical supply chain, is a cornerstone of the Ministry of Health's surgical program. He noted that more than 2,000 vascular surgeries were performed last year, with a steady monthly increase, supported by a dedicated daily patient follow-up clinic.
Dr. Iyad Ajarmah said the initial diagnosis involved a fracture in the left humerus with arterial and venous damage. The vascular team prepared the arteries and veins for repair, while a temporary splint was placed until bone stabilization could be completed.
Dr. Jasser Zubaidi, Head of the Orthopedics and Joints Department, said the fracture was stabilized with a solid metal fixation across both ends of the humerus, followed by tissue repair.
Dr. Ali Thunaibat, Head of the Vascular Surgery Department, explained that after bone stabilization, blood vessels and nerves were repaired using grafts, and damaged tissue was removed.
The six-hour procedure was followed by the patient's transfer to intensive care and then to the vascular unit. Her condition is stable, and the limb is showing significant recovery.
Dr. Thunaibat emphasized that such complex surgeries require rapid initial response, immediate transfer coordination, and the readiness of a multidisciplinary surgical team supported by skilled nursing staff and independent anesthesia services.
This achievement underscores Al Bashir Hospitals' advanced capabilities in handling complex medical cases, solidifying their role as a leading reference center in the Kingdom.
