Trump aide claims India ‘financing’ Ukraine war

(MENAFN) Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has accused India of effectively funding Russia’s conflict in Ukraine by continuing to buy oil from Moscow. Speaking on Fox News, Miller explained that the US imposed 25% tariffs on Indian imports and additional penalties due to India’s defense and trade relations with Russia.

He highlighted that India is purchasing nearly as much Russian oil as China, calling it a surprising fact. Recently, former President Trump also criticized India’s ties with Russia on social media, stating indifference to the economic consequences for India and expressing frustration over high tariffs on US exports to India.

Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on countries buying Russian oil unless Russia agrees to a significant peace deal in Ukraine. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio similarly condemned India’s oil imports from Russia as sustaining Moscow’s war effort, describing it as a source of tension in US-India relations.

In response, India defended its oil purchases by emphasizing their role in preventing drastic spikes in global crude prices despite Western sanctions.
