China on Red Alert as Typhoon Wipha Nears

(MENAFN) China has activated its highest emergency alert level as Typhoon Wipha, the sixth typhoon to form this year, barrels toward the southern region, authorities confirmed Monday.

The powerful storm is forecasted to strike Guangdong province, where ominous dark clouds have already gathered in advance of anticipated torrential rain.

According to media, meteorologists expect the intense downpours to persist for the next three days.

Officials have ordered local governments to implement preventative measures against severe weather hazards, including flash floods, landslides, and urban flooding.

On Sunday, the typhoon made landfall on Hailing Island, located in southern China.

Prior to reaching the mainland, Wipha had already disrupted life in Taiwan and Hong Kong—triggering landslides, obstructing roads, and forcing a temporary halt to flights and train services.
