Syrian Interior Ministry announces end of clashes in Suwayda
(MENAFN) The Syrian Interior Ministry announced on Saturday that the city of Suwayda has been cleared of tribal fighters and that recent clashes have ceased. Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba, speaking via the state-run news agency, said security forces were deployed to the province’s northern and western areas to enforce a ceasefire deal.
“Clashes within the city’s neighborhoods have been brought to a halt,” al-Baba stated, crediting intensive government efforts for restoring calm.
The Syrian presidency had earlier declared an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in Suwayda following several days of violent unrest. Fighting erupted on July 13 between Bedouin Arab tribes and armed Druze factions in the southern province, escalating tensions in the area.
Israeli airstrikes soon followed, targeting military installations and infrastructure in Damascus. Israel claimed its actions were to protect Druze communities, though most Druze leaders in Syria rejected foreign interference and voiced their support for a unified Syrian state.
Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December, Israel has intensified its air campaign in Syria and officially ended the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, dismantling the long-standing buffer zone between the two countries.
